"Not everyone who enters your life is sent by God"

The Gift of Discernment

In life, we meet countless people, family, friends, colleagues, leaders, and even strangers. Some encourage us, others distract us, and a few are strategically placed by God to propel us into destiny. Yet, Scripture also warns that not everyone who enters our lives carries divine intent.

Some may be instruments of the enemy, sent to derail, discourage, or deceive. That is why discernment is not optional for believers; it is vital. We must learn to test the spirits, weigh intentions, and recognize the fruit of those around us.

1. Not Every Voice is from God

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

In our relationships, friendships, or even mentorships, not every voice is heaven-sent. Some words may sound spiritual, loving, or wise, but without God’s Spirit, they carry no truth. Testing the spirit behind the person means looking beyond charm, influence, or even charisma.

2. By Their Fruits You Will Know Them

"You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?" Matthew 7:16

Actions speak louder than words. A person who is truly aligned with God will display the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

If someone constantly sows division, gossip, manipulation, or leads you into sin, no matter how persuasive they are, their fruit reveals their root.

3. Watch the Company You Keep

"Do not be deceived: 'Bad company ruins good morals.'" 1 Corinthians 15:33

Who you allow into your circle determines the direction of your life. Some people carry light; others carry darkness. Relationships are spiritual, what surrounds you influences you. Guard your associations, because the wrong alliance can slow you down, while the right one can sharpen your faith.

4. The Enemy Comes Disguised

"And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light." 2 Corinthians 11:14

The greatest deception is not obvious evil, but counterfeit good. Some people may appear supportive, but their true intention is to gain access, influence, or advantage. Just because someone comes in the name of friendship, ministry, or opportunity doesn’t mean God sent them.

5. Ask God for Wisdom and Clarity

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." James 1:5

Discernment is sharpened through prayer, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. Before you open your heart, your plans, or your trust to someone, ask God for confirmation. He reveals what the natural eye cannot see.

Walk in Spiritual Alertness

The enemy knows he cannot destroy a believer filled with God’s Spirit, but he will attempt to plant people in your life to drain, distract, or delay you. This is why discernment is one of the greatest gifts you can ask God for in this season. Open your heart, but guard it with prayer. Be loving, but not naïve. Be welcoming, but spiritually alert. When you discern who is truly sent by God, you will protect your destiny and walk with the right people who push you closer to Christ.

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4:23
