At Bay Talk Hub, we believe powerful leadership stories deserve to be told. Emily Ntuli’s journey is a compelling testament to resilience, purpose, and values-driven leadership.

From humble beginnings to her role as Chief Operations Officer at HBGSchindlers Attorneys, Emily’s story reflects what is possible when discipline, integrity, and vision meet opportunity. Her experience across the legal sector, combined with her commitment to transformation and community upliftment, makes her voice both relevant and inspiring.

We are honoured to share her journey with our readers.

Emily Ntuli’s leadership journey is rooted in resilience, discipline, and the power of opportunity. Born and raised in a small township in Pretoria as the fourth daughter in her family, Emily grew up witnessing her parents’ hard work and determination. Her mother built a career working at the airport, while her father established himself as a transport owner in the early 90s. From an early age, Emily absorbed the values of responsibility, integrity, and perseverance — lessons that would shape both her personal and professional life.

Emily’s early education began at a Laerskool in Pretoria, before she continued her secondary schooling at a girls’ convent school in Pretoria, where she matriculated. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University, becoming the first member of her family to obtain a degree — a milestone that marked both personal achievement and generational progress.

The disciplined and values-driven environment of her schooling years instilled resilience, self-discipline, and accountability — qualities that would later become hallmarks of her leadership style.

Her professional journey began humbly in 2013, when she joined a travel agency as a receptionist. Demonstrating early aptitude and commitment, she was soon promoted to HR administrator and Personal Assistant to the CEO, a role that exposed her to people management, and operational systems — the foundations of professional service excellence.

In 2014, Emily transitioned into the legal services sector, joining a Pretoria-based law firm as a Patents Secretary. She later progressed to Recruitment Administrator, stepping into the role she had long envisioned for herself. Her talent and dedication soon drew the attention of an international law firm based in Sandton, where she joined the HR department and spent over eight years expanding her scope into broader human resources, operations and organisational strategy.

Today, Emily serves as the Chief Operations Officer at HBGSchindlers Attorneys, a medium-sized, multi-disciplinary law firm based in Melrose, Johannesburg. In this role, she provides strategic leadership across operations management, governance, risk and compliance, human resources, marketing and business development, and technology, ensuring that strategy is translated seamlessly into execution. Under her leadership, HBGSchindlers Attorneys continues to grow as a full-service legal practice, offering integrated solutions across commercial and corporate law, litigation and dispute resolution, property law and conveyancing, employment law, insolvency and restructuring, regulatory compliance, and tax matters, alongside notarial, fiduciary, and estate-planning services.

Emily’s approach ensures that operational systems, people, and strategy work in harmony. By combining technical legal expertise with practical, business-focused advice, she enables the firm to deliver client-centric services while fostering high-performing internal operations. Her leadership philosophy reflects the belief that COOs are strategic drivers, not just support functions, shaping governance, culture, and organisational success.

Beyond her executive role, Emily is actively committed to community development and transformation initiatives. She serves as a Non-Executive Board Member for The Gelykheid Foundation NPC, which advocates for socio-economic upliftment in South African townships through entrepreneurial literacy and economic empowerment, addressing unemployment and economic exclusion. She is also a Sub-committee Member of The Black Management Forum (BMF) in the Policy and Research Committee, which champions transformation and managerial leadership in South Africa. These roles reflect her dedication to advancing both ethical leadership and meaningful social impact.

Reflecting on her journey, Emily notes that challenges have always been opportunities in disguise. Navigating male-dominated sectors, managing complex organisations, and fostering high-performance that have shaped her into a leader who balances authority with empathy and accountability with inspiration. Leadership, she believes, is not a title but a responsibility to create environments where individuals, teams, and the organisation can succeed.

Emily’s story exemplifies a central truth: that background does not define destiny, but vision, resilience, and determination do. From a receptionist in a small travel agency to COO of a respected law firm, her career demonstrates that values-driven, strategic leadership is cultivated over time, shaped by experience, opportunity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Today, Emily Ntuli stands as a testament to integrated, ethical leadership in South Africa’s professional services sector. Her work at HBGSchindlers Attorneys, complemented by her contributions to the Gelykheid Foundation and the BMF, highlights a rare combination of operational expertise, community-minded leadership, and transformational impact.
